blawgerz rule 1.0: flying a kite

Okay. So. I know what you're thinking. (Just kidding. I don't. I don't know what you're thinking, that is. I've always found this saying rather peculiar. It's this awkward transition where people try to pretend that they're inside your mind when 98.3% of the times that someone has told me that they "know what I'm thinking," the rest of the sentence does not correspond to what was inside my mind. Aka, that was awkward... you didn't know what I was thinking. ANYWAYS. I'm being awkward. Let's move on...) SO, I know what you're thinking... "Lexy, why does this illustration say "flying a kite" when the girl in the illustration is not, in fact, flying a kite?" (If you were actually thinking that, do inform me. I think I'll chuckle a little longer than necessary.) Well, to answer you're inquiring mind, it's my very first blogger illustration! Meet the fabulous Amy from Flying a Kite.

I've been stalking loving Amy's blog for a few years now. It's incredibly different from mine - but I still adore it. When I first stumbled on it, I read it to the very first post. (Yes, that shows just how incredible it is. And also how I really didn't have a life. But we'll ignore the latter bit.) Seriously. Visiting Amy's blog is like entering a whole new world: a world of unwavering love, and dreams, and happily ever afters. I think the word that I would attach to it is magic. And really, if magic existed in real life - or even in cyber space - Amy's blog would be its definition. She makes the world beautiful. She evokes such a dreamy energy that immediately transcends onto me whenever I visit. She makes me love the world. In fact, I would say that you can't not love the world after reading her blog, her words, her world. It puzzles me: how she, somehow, is able to create a beautiful world through the simplicity of words and photos. She must be a fairy. Or magic. Magical fairy? I don't know what I'm saying. Her blog is beautiful. Check it out! (Don't just look at the pictures. Read the words. MAGIC, I tell you.) Also, she is Canadian, shops at Value Village and is born on December 13th (my birthday!), so we're basically twins. I sound creepy.)

It was fun doing this illustration! Amy's world is so dreamy and I let it inspire me. It was splendid.

Hope you all have a Marvelous Monday! (And rest of the week!) (I just put that in brackets because it broke up the amazingly awesome alliteration (hah? see what I did there?) of "Marvelous Monday." You get it.)

Question for today:
(Note: If you answer this, we are automatically best friends. Regardless of your answer. I'm not sure if anyone will answer this/ read the whole question. But DO. I heard it on Wiretap (my favourite radio show!) and I thought I'd give it a "go." Hypothetical questions are oodles of fun. This could be fun. It is fun. Do it.)

In long... At long last, someone invents "the dream VCR." This machine allows you to tape an entire evening's worth of your own dreams, which you can then watch at your leisure. However, the inventor of the dream VCR will only allow you to use this device of you agree to a strange caveat: When you watch your dreams, you must do so with your family and your closest friends in the same room. They get to watch your dreams along with you. And if you don't agree to this, you can't use the dream VCR. Would you still do this?

In short... If there was a VCR that could record your dreams but you were only allowed to watch the tapes with a roomful of people -- would you still choose to do this?

Well, I often don't remember my dreams and I only remember my dreams once every week or two weeks, but I have known them in the past to be quite seriously weird, so to save the embarrassment I would not use this Dream VCR and leave my dreams as a mystery.

And not all my dreams are good, noooo way. I have been seriously scared. I've had this recurring dream since I was little that my Dad and I were sprinting on this path by the beach that had palm trees draping over it, and we were being chased by the army. Weird and scary.

the drawing is really cool! im def checking out this chicks blog.

my answer to your question. i am really tempted to say NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, since too many of my dreams are beyond embarrassing. and my superstitious Filipino and Italian family would be flipping shit thinking this dream machine was some sort of demon ghost machine. but im gonna say yes. I have too many good ideas when i dream that i forget when i wake up. plus that is waaayy cool. who wouldn't want to see their dreams? slash i love how you chose vcr instead of dvd. screw dvd! vcr is where it's at! k im a dork. night!

That's an awesome picture. I love how you made the girl in the drawing actually look like Amy (I have a weird thing where I like things like that...like).

Anywho. I always have pleasant dreams. In fact, I LOVE dreaming – that’s why I take naps and sleep for 16 hours a day (not altogether, that would be impossible even for me, unless I was fatigued or something, but then again I do nothing that would cause me to be fatigued in the first place. Unless gaming for too much does that. Which I think it does. Although it more likely destroys your eyes … bah! Off topic!).
Okay, so as I was saying, I love dreaming, but I don’t think I would want this Dream VCR (what is a VCR by the way, I mean, what does it stand for? I knew the meaning but I’m having a memory blank). This has two reasons:

My dreams are MY dreams, the one thing which no one can touch or mess up (unless they give me some weird pill which messes up my dreams…).

And:

I have a fair memory of my dreams anyway, so I don’t really need this Dream VCR, unless one day I forgot or if I had a really, really good dream and I want to relive it. So I suppose that the only time that I will use this VCR is if I had a dream I want to relive.

Phew! Finally finished my answer! Sorry for the long comment, good reading material though…

That's a stunning illustration!

And hmm, I would do it just because I'm curious to see what my dreams would look like while I'm awake -- but since I have to do with a roomful of people, I'd make them wear blindfolds & headphones first while they're around, haha. Showing them my dreams might feel so exposing.

Man, you're making me wish I could draw all over again. Rude. Flaunting your talented self like people wanna see... oh, right, they actually do wanna see. Don't mind me. (:

I'd say why not to the VCR question you posed. I can't think of a dream I've had that I would be embarrassed to show to other people--usually they're so weird that I try to recreate them for people so they can also bask in the oddity that is my unconscious mind. The only reason I can imagine not being okay with it is if I managed to convince myself that it was fundamentally breaking the boundaries of personal and public life or something. But I think I'd go for it.

The biggest roadblock, really, is that I don't know if I want to watch my dreams at all.

I could never watch my dreams with people! I remember them all in the minutetest detail and some are really embarassing!

Amazing illustration, love it, and her blog looks beautiful!

I really don't think I would.

Gorgeous!

And yes. My dreams tend to be really funny and weird and I tell my friends about them, especially because they're often in them. The only ones I might feel uncomfortable about my family seeing are ones that tend toward the sexytimes, but even those are more funny than anything else.

Years ago I had a dream I was about to have sex with a good friend of mine and he took of his pants and he was wearing Santa Claus boxers. Like red shiny satin with white fur trim. I told him sorry, but no and made him put his pants back on.

Thanks for stopping by at my blog. I really like yours - maybe we can start following eachother?

You did a great job on that illustration, I love it.

I would use the dream VCR. I'm not ashamed of the weird things going on in my head during the night, even though I wonder if I still think the same about that when I'm sitting in that room, watching my dreams with family and friends around. Happily enough I don't have a lot of family/friends.. but I would do it. What I'm dreaming can't be too bad, hmm?

I think I'd just go for it and hope nothing embarrassing happened during my dreams. And nothing sexual. Cuz uhh watching like romantic comedies w/ my parents are bad enough :S #asianfamilyfail.

Ahh, thanks for the comments, friends. I didn't know if you would all go for the hypothetical question, but THANK YOU. I find hypothetical questions very insightful. With what, exactly? I'm not sure. But they're fun.

I WOULD want a dream VCR. I'm terrible with remembering dreams - seriously. I can NEVER remember what I was dreaming about. Which is really sad, because I think dreams are incredibly interesting and insightful. I feel like I find out things that were going on in my brain that I didn't even know about. WOAAAAH TRIPPY. Also, dreams are unconscious/ can't be controlled, so hopefully it's nothing to be embarrassed about...

Lovely illustration (and I'm definitely going to check out her blog)!

As for your question, I tend to remember my most interesting dreams on my own so I wouldn't do it (plus dreams feel so personal and I'm not sure I want others to see them-though maybe...).

Sooo very true hit it right on the mark!! about the turn of phrase 'I know what you're thinking' - us humans we do have fascinating behaviorism and adages.

Moreover that's a buoyant whimsical illustration, I like the faded wash effect on the face. Amy must be chuffed with that!

Contemplating the dream VCR question, I would choose to say No, I remember most of my dreams and I treasure it's odyssey of intimacy in the transparent world we live in. I sometimes have lucid dreams ( a dream in which one is aware that one is dreaming) they are the ultimate kind!!

her blog is fantastically poetic, and entrancing in all the right ways. her words are so generous and hold such vision. the illustration matches this dreaminess exactly, gorgeous! as for your question, ummm I think I would if I didn't remember my dream but was actually curious, and its not like I have anything to hide but you know the days where you are completely conscious and planning and plotting out awake dreams, in that event I don't think I would.

jess said...

That illustration is so pretty.

I wouldn't use the dream VCR because my dreams have been really weird. I think my close friends would be able to handle them but not my family.

Laura Mullins said...

YES, TO THE VCR QUESTION. sounds crazy awesome. i love amy's blog, too! your illustration is sooo wonderful. love all the hair and that cute little boat.

Angelica Ng said...

I was actually thinking about that question! I thought it was some magical representation of a kite lol. But now I understand! Wow, I must check out her blog, if you love it so much, to read it all the way to the first post! As for the question...I wouldn't use it, because dreams are personal. And the magic of dreams is that they are personal and fleeting. Would I still love dreaming as much if I could simply press "reply"? No. It's the once-in-a-lifetime thing that makes dreaming so special.

YES!!! Because if they were incredibly embarrassing I would laugh them off, but sometimes I wish I could just see my dreams or remember them or whatever. Especially the ones that seem to predict happily ever afters.

Beautiful blog by the way. And gorgeous illustration. She should be honoured to have such a beautiful illustration of herself.

love the illustration , will check out her blog .

as for the question hmmmmm meeeeeh i will pass loooool as much as i would like to watch my dreams just so i can see them clearer , i just think ur mind is like a diary , should be kept private and that include dreams . eg like in iception if someone gets hold of how ur mind works they can detroy you loooooooooool so mind/dreams = superpowers :D
